View Full Version : LLY Mouthpiece & CAI

Been reading a lot about the restrictive LLY Mouthpiece & am leaning towards using the LBZ, (if I can find one). I am looking for recommendations on which cold air intake would work the best without having to re-flash the ECM. I primarily use this rig for road trips & pulling my 5er that weighs in @ 11,500. Any thoughts would be appreciated..............Thanx

There is a CAI at coolmyduramax.com that isn't pretty, but it's effective and cheap. It basically seals up your OEM box and allows you to pull air from the fenderwell rather than from inside the engine compartment.

Also, im pretty sure you dont have to reflash the ECM for the mouthpiece. Basically just a R&R inlet.

I not sure which CAI I will be using, but I hear going with the complete LBZ is a way to go & am told it will need a re-flash for the MAF sensor. Is this correct?

I know that the LBZ and LLY MAF sensors max out at a different voltage, which could be why you have to reflash it, but im not 100% sure.

Have you looked over the DIY on this found here (http://dmaxcentral.com/forum/showthread.php?t=942)?
**from the link provided above**
"The beauty of this modification is you get increased airflow without having to recalibrate your factory MAF (mass air flow) sensor."
I would think if you stuck with your stock LLY airbox, did the LBZ mouthpiece and the CAI mod from coolmyduramax, you would be good to go for not much $ and no MAF recalibration.

The complete LBZ intake requires a MAF reflash. If you're having the stealers do it, you need to buy the mp first so they can do it all at once... 'cause they don't replace the mp as a part of that TSB (go figure - the stupid mp is 98% of the problem, yet they don't replace it...).
If you're just doing the turbo mp, be that either the LBZ or the LBZ Kodiak mp, you don't have to reflash the MAF.
Diesel_Day_Dreamin and I have done different mods - D3 has the complete LBZ intake and LBZ mp; I have the LLY stock intake with the TxC CAI and LBZ Kodiak mp. The thing I like about mine is that the filters are still only $23 or so... and I didn't have to hacksaw anything to make it work.
D3 and I are working on a condensed sticky out on another site - once we have it finished, it would probably be a good thing out here too... if we can get someone to stick it here for us.
Hope this helps. Let us know if you have any questions. Good luck!

Randy,
Thanks for the info. What's the difference on the reg LBZ MP and LBZ Kodiak MP? Also on a stock tune, in your opinion, is there much difference in performance? I'm not trying to make Tug a hot rod but would like a little pick-me-up on accel when pulling this "at limits" trailer! ):h Appreciate any info. Is the MP easy to install? rockintom

LBZ mp is longer and larger diameter (at the point where it meets the intake) than the LBZ Kodiak mp. It requires you to either install the entire LBZ intake or to hacksaw the LLY intake to match up to the mp and bridge it with a coupler of some type.
The LBZ Kodiak mp will mount right up to the existing LLY intake, albeit with a little flex in the bellows of the LLY intake. No harm though.
Install time for the Kodiak is 30-45 minutes tops... though the LBZ mp install is more complex in that you have to hacksaw and install the coupler.
It's definitely noticeable. Some folks who have dyno'ed their trucks before and after have reported 42-55 RWHP difference... nothing else changed. You will notice a difference.

I went to the DIY site and saw the thread D3 did on the subject. Good thread. I read somewhere of someone said the 4" splice at HD/Lowes is not temperature rated and may fail. What and where should I look for the proper material? Do you know anything on that deal?
Thanks again, my friend. rockin'

I suspect the coupler will probably hold, though I tend to agree that the coupler's aren't made for high temps... though I don't know for sure what temps it would have to hold since it's internally being cooled by the outside air temps. Lot of guys are going for silicone intercooler boots. I've seen some discussions about them on the DP but don't personally have any experience with 'em. D3 might have some info about 'em. For now... with this cold weather, I'm sure you'd be OK until you could find a silicone boot.
Good luck!

It was $86.69 plus $9.95 shipping. I tried GM Parts Direct, but the site said the part had been discontinued as did some other sites I visited. This was the only one I found that said they had one. When I checked on the status, it was still being processed. Will let you know when it ships..............

OK, I struck-out. Just got an E-Mail from GM Parts Cheap saying the MP is no longer available. Went back to the Web & after an hour of phone calls, no one seems to have any. Are there any other alternatives to the LBZ MP that will still retain the stock appearance? Or does anyone know who has some?

You know... I just don't see how GM could possibly discontinue a part on such a recent product - the LBZ was produced up to what... mid 2007? That means the most recent version is no more than a little more than a year and a couple months old? How could they possibly discontinue a product for such a recent model... unless there's another model that also works. :cookoo:

Yes, something doesn't add up. The problem is that the MP change on the LBZ corrects future 6.6's & unless GM admits to that, & issues a recall, we will be left experimenting, & I for one do not have the resources to do so. Fortunately these forums help to identify problems & possible solutions, of which I for one am grateful for.
I just placed my order for the Kodiak MP & look forward to getting it soon. I have a trip comming up in Feb that I'll be pulling my 5er up & over the passes from Oregon to Nevada.

Sorry guys... Been real busy lately.
In my LBZ mod thread I used my existing LLY box and didn't disturb the MAF sensor. If you don't switch air boxes, you don't need the reflash.
What I finally did...
After reading a TSB on our LLY trucks, I found out that GM was replacing the LLY Box with the LBZ filter box because of it's factory CAI. GM basically admitted that the LLY filterbox is drawing in hot underhood temperatures by posting this TSB. I then inquired about it, and to make a very long story short, I had my LLY system replaced with the LBZ and reflashed all under the 100,000 mile drivetrain warranty per their TSB. Because it was free, I went this route. Yes, the filters are like $55., but the change intervals are further apart so it's not really a big deal for me. I am happy!
I cannot post a copy of the TSB. It exceeds the allowable post size. it is 412 kb.

The '06 filter setup. It's free (under warranty) along with the reflash. It's the only factory CAI you can get. If you're not worried with your warranty, any aftermarket CAI will work. TxC's with the LLY box is the cheapest way to go.

PM me your email wkndwaryrs and I can email you the TSB. However, you would need to find an LBZ MP fo it to work. You can't easily install the (have it installed) LBZ assembly using the Kodiak MP.

I have read the TSB posted today,& did experience high temps while pulling a grade in high ambients. Told the Dealer about it, but since there were no codes they did not do anything. How do I get the Dealer to install the upgrade? Do I arm myself with the TSB & try to force the issue? Is it covered under the engine warranty?............Thanx

Good, you got the first step out of the way (initial contact to the dealer).
I then called the 1-800 GM hotline and told them about it and said I found the TSB online about the retrofit and proceeded to tell them that I though this would help my situation. I told the 1-800 guy that mine overheated on a Sunday in Colorado, no dealers were open, I limped into an Advance Auto Parts store where the counterperson came out with a code reader and cleared them for me (hence, no codes for the dealer to find). I then gave the 1-800 GM rep the hot intake temperature and engine coolant hot codes and the rest is history. They set up the appointment that met my needs and had the work done. If you clear the path for the dealer to get paid (warranty approval through GM), the dealer is like, ''no problem''. ;)

One other thing I pointed out was the hood gasket and cowling on the firewall just above the turbo. I too (or the dealer) was not able to ''duplicate the conditions'' because of no major inclines here on the east coast and outdoor temps were now (then) cooler. The evidence was there that I had run hot with my melted cowling...

Struck out at the dealer & GM. They won't do anything until there are codes or they can reproduce the conditions. So if I'm to get anything from them on it, I'll have to wait until it gets hot again. I thinking that I will install the parts as per DDD's TSB & be done with it. So far without the filter box, the price tag is at $258.00 @ partszoneonline. I'd like to keep the stock look, but if it gets too costly, I go after-market or TX Christophers' set up.

I installed the LBZ mouthpiece last summer and used the Banks LBZ Ramair CAI. I've run the setup with the maf sensor rescaled, currently I have stock maf settings with no problems. With where the Banks re-positions the maf sensor on the intake I dont think the re-flash is necessary, if it is, my truck missed the memo :)

Not necessary... it'll bolt right up to the stock intake. Some cut the intake at the turbo warning label and then bridge the gap with an intercooler boot or a rubber coupler from Lowes or Home Depot... but the Kodiak will bolt right up with a slight bend in the bellows. That's precisely how I did mine.
Good luck!

Am using a Kodiak MP, could not find an LBZ. Seems to spool up quicker & is more "throatier" at idle, but does not increase cab noise. Pulling the 5er to Nevada on the 28th weather permitting & will have more to report upon my return around 3-09. Hoping for lower engine coolant & EGT's, along with better pulling over the passes.

Thanks to all here for info on installing the LBZ MP on my 05 LLY. Easy enough to install with all the pix in this thread. I retained the original airbox (without the fender patch).
I was a little disappointed in the enhanced performance. A little better, but not a $100 worth. I'm NOT trying to make a hot rod out of this thing just a little more power on the hills when towing as we are heavy.
BTW, I do know a dealer that has a extra LBZ M.P. he will sell. PM me for info. Thanks again for all the help!

With a stock tune, you won't see much difference, but you will see some. With mine... I can tell a pretty significant difference. Check out my dyno numbers in my sig - that was attained with a 100 HP Predator tune. No way could I have attained those numbers on the stock mp.
But a stock tune? You will see some differences...

I know exactly what you mean. We tow heavy & I just wanted a little more HP. Went with the PPE Economy tuner on level 2. Now the hills I used to struggle on, I have to back off on. Tuner is real easy to install & remove as needed..............
