I've been playing with my new Scangauge II this week, but I had a question about the intake temps. Cruising down the highway they never seem to get closer than about 15 degrees above ambient. I saw as high as 70 degrees above ambient while climbing mountains. All of this was unloaded, I haven't towed yet. Truck is stock except for cat back exhaust, 265s, and retrax bed cover. I know that the temps can climb but I was surprised to see them so high when empty.
For those of you that have gauges, does this match up to what you see?

My intake temps are about 3-5 degrees above ambient, but i have a S&B filter with holes in it for more airflow. Do you have the stock intake?
BTW welcome to dmaxcentral! :hello: Dave (blksmok) is also in mesa!

Stock intake.
Yeah, I know Dave and all of the rest of you clowns ):h from dp and elsewhere. Thanks for the welcome. I am mostly a lurker but post in spurts.

I know there is a "swiss cheese" mod that involves drilling holes into your intake but let me try and dig up that thread.
BTW, check out the "dyno day" thread, im sure all of us az'ers would like to meet you!

Still on the fence about the dyno day, we'll see when the time comes.
The swiss cheese mod isn't for the LBZs. I know that PPE had a mod for the LBZs but it seemed to draw more engine bay air in.

Welcome Kelly. I don't monitor my IAT's anymore but when I did, I don't recall that they were ever much above ~30° OAT unloaded with my LBZ.

I think the mod brian is referring to was to remove the "tornado" looking piece. I never did anything with mine.

I saw 50-70 degrees different on the I17 heading up to Flagstaff. Obviously I was climbing 6% grades at 80mph but still... Truck was in 6th gear, Water temp was about 180, ambient was 50 degrees, the truck wasn't hot in the least.
The intake temp was taken from the Scangauge (from the bus) and the ambient temp from the rearview mirror so obviously one could be off. The rest of the weekend on flat highways in Utah and on the way home the spread was about 20 degrees. Did you ever see your spread get smaller than 15 degrees?
I am not looking to spend any money, just wondering if this is normal behavior, if not, where to start looking, or are there any DIY fixes (besides removing the tornado).

It's been over a year so my memory could be wrong, but IIRC, mine was usually around 10° or less above OAT while cruising freeway speeds unloaded. Sitting in traffic it would creep, but moving, it was usually close to OAT. I could log it with EFILive and get back to you if you want. Probably not until after Wed. though.

No worries. If you happen to be logging and wouldn't mind, but I wouldn't put yourself out. I am sure there are others with gauges or EFILive that have experiences to share.
I am not the most anal guy about watching fuel mileage and stats, that is why I like the scangauge, it does it automatically. I need to hand calc it now that I have it calibrated and see how close it is.

Where did you get your scangauge? I've thought about picking one up. Seems like a handy little gadget.

It came from MGT motorsports, I have the blendmount for it.

I'm reading mine with Hyperpac live data and with an S&B intake, I'm seeing temps of around 100 degrees at highway speeds, with outside air temps in the 70's.
Last week it was 62 at midnight and my intake temps were reading 92 degrees at highway cruise. The second I stomp on it, the temps shoot up to 150 or so.
For a supposed "cold air" intake, I expected lower temps, closer to outside temps.
I would like to see if the Banks scoop could somehow mount up to the stock S&B air box. I know that would help for sure.

Thanks Nick, sounds like it is more normal than anything. I agree that yours seems worse considering that you have an aftermarket intake. I saw your intake thread over at dtr too and I'll be keeping an eye on it.

I'll log it on Wednesday. I have to take the laptop and EFILive with me anyway to program a guys truck, so I'll just log on the way to work.

I made my own "scoop" for my AFE cold-air intake and I have noticed a difference of 20 degrees less than my previous outside ambient temps. Hey...they do in fact work.

I'm wondering if the Banks scoops would somehow work for the S&B boxes. I'm certainly not gonna drop $500 on a new intake. I think that price is absurd. I have better things to spend my money on, like bills at this point. There's nothing wrong with D&B, only if someone could figure out a way to fab up the super scoop to work with the air box.
I bet its possible. I recently cut out a chunk of plastic under the intake and you can see clear through to the ground. I moved my HID ballast for my fog lights and repositioned it and cut out some of the plastic. I wouldnt think that between Banks and S&B, the boxes wouldnt be that much different.

You could probably make something up yourself in order to connect a scoop to that air box. I luckily had a round 3" flange molded on to the bottom of mine that I connected 3" ABS piping to with a rubber flange. This was an experiment that I decided to try out. Hell for under $20 in parts ...it has been working well.

Kelly,
I logged on the way to work today and with an airfilter that is probably 70% gone, (I'm gonna throw a fresh one in for the dyno day) I was seeing rock solid 14° above ambient cruising at 75MPH. I got off the freeway and drove a few miles of surface streets to see if I could heat it up and romping on it stoplight to stoplight it got up to 20° above ambient, but that was mostly after I would come to a stop. While moving, it would be 15° - 16° above ambient on surface streets doing 45 (on the way to 60 ):h).
Hope this helps.

Thanks! I am sure that is similar then. I sold my toyhauler last week, in the market for a new one. I am sure once I get that I will be able to see some killer intake temps heading to Payson.

...and yet another pic. Shortly after this was completed, I installed a fine meshed metal screen in order to keep bugs and debris from entering.

Your tires rub at all at full lock? I hear thats been a problem with Banks scoops. I guess their scoops are designed for trucks running stock tires.

I know its not to relevant with the scoops but Steve did you ever see a difference when you wraped your intake like i did on my F-150?
I am waiting to do this to my new intake which ever way i choose to go.

Now that we have a baseline perhaps it is time to try the PPE mod?
http://www.pacificp.com/pdf/2006-2007%20Airbox%20Modification%20LLY-LBZ.pdf
What is the downside, I am assuming the tornado portion is there to prevent water ingestion?

Or debris from what I understand.
There's actually two ways to do this. Initially, when I read it, I saw that people were popping out the end piece with the fan looking thing in it. It literally pops out and requires no cutting. When you reinstall the intake, you'll notice that the system is no longer cut off from underhood air because of the 2" gap now and it might be counter productive. So I took it back out and found the piece that I popped off and cut the fins out and popped it back into place, which locked the box to the fender well, closing it off from underhood air.
The stock system draws 100% of its air through the fenderwell. For those of us running S&B intakes, our filters are drawing 90% of its air from the bottom of the box, which is open, and sealed off to the inside engine heated air.
I did notice before I moved that even with running the winter cover, that had no effect on temps of the intake air. Evidently the air that these systems, stock or aftermarket, does not come from through the grill and the stack.
I'm on a mission now to see if a Banks scoop would mount up to the S&B box, with a little fabricating.

NOPE ! I have about 1 inch of clearance...unless that is of course I jump the truck (I haven't tested that yet).

I did see the temps lower about 5 degrees on average, but they did still climb ever so slowly to normal range.:banghead:
