View Full Version : Loss of power after downpipe install

I just installed a cat delete & diamond eye down pipe last week & have lost a huge amount of bottom end power. Mid & top end aren't too bad. I towed my 5th wheel hauler to glamis last weekend and it towed pretty good. My EGT's never went about 1200. I removed my Edge today and that didn't seem to make a difference. I'm also not getting any smoke at all, no matter how I drive or what level the Edge was set. Any ideas? I could usually light up the tires anytime & now I can probably run faster then the truck from a dead stop. Within the last 500 miles I installed a trans go jr & changed all the oils & filters. Not sure what to do.....

Since edge smokes good on the higher levels, id suspect that it's the edge. I really didnt notice a difference in power, just sound.

Do you have gauges? How much boost are you making?
TBone

good question. my edge is used for gauges. I'll plug it in now and see how my boost is tommorrow.

When you got your kennedy boost stick, did you get the extension? If so, I'd pull the boost stick out as well while you troubleshoot. Also, what are you using to check for codes?

Dave id assume he uses the edge to check codes.

I also have the kenedy boost stick though it's removed. I use my edge for gauges & check for codes. Though I also bought a seperate boost gauge I have yet to install. The resaon for buying the boost stick was for towing & only plug it in for towing the hauler. I drove around the block a few times tonight and was getting a steady 20-22 psi for turbo and any of the edge levels.

Sounds like your edge took a crap on you

I'd check your fuel pressure and just for grins your balance rate. Might be that your fuel filter is clogging, or you're sucking air somewhere, or your cp3 is taking a dump. :(
Also even though you're making boost at peak, how is it down low? Could be your VVT is acting up. I would think it would smoke if this was the case, but who knows??

I don't think it's the edge module, only because he said he took the edge off completely and was still experiencing problems. I think Rick is on track with his suggestions above. I forget, will the edge display rail pressure?

There's no rail pressure on the edge. I replaced the fuel filter few hundred miles ago but will get another just to eliminate that as a cause. What's CP3 & VVT?
Other ideas I got were to unplug the batteries for a few & also check for any air leaks.

cp3 is your high pressure fuel pump and the VVT is your variable vane turbo.

How would I check the fuel pressure & balance rate?
Do you guys have any great Duramax mechanics that you can recommend?
My expertise & skill level only go so far...

Tbone. I have a msd dashhawk that plugs into your OBD2 that displays accual rail psi.
Also where in chandler are you? i can think of two that are in the area.

Brian, you could also bring EFILive and log his truck. Pull his stock tune and log what the truck is doing with markers and you can then go back through the tune file and find out what is being commanded, and what is being delivered.
If you have any questions on how to do all that...
call Nick. :D

went to tony's (tbone) house today and read his stock tune, which was the 6128 lbz OS, thought it was the new OS GM released for them, but the truck felt as fast stock as mine does stock. had a little studder between 35-40-45ish, but the trans did shift kind of hard on the 2-3 shift. trans-go is doing it's job :thumb:
IMO it just seemed like a bad case of the fuel filter being plugged. There isnt really any significant difference power wise between the stock and diamond eye downpipes. You start to see a difference above 3000rpm.

Thanks Brian for coming over & the help yesterday. I cleaned my MAF sensor & replaced the fuel filter. I noticed a difference after that. I think I'll be making the upgrade from Edge to PPE this year also. I really appreciate all the help here, you guys are great.
