Hi All,

I would like to pick the brains of you Dmax owners out there.

I have a 2007 LBZ that I use as a daily driver for work, not much heavy towing except on weekends. It has 107,000 km on it and I have had it upgraded when it was new to an AFE stage 2 intake, MBRP stainless turbo back exhaust and I am running an Edge Evo.

I am considering changing out the edge as I hate the way it shifts under power. I run it on the extreme setting all the time except when towing as I found this is the best mileage setting. I also do not like all the smoke it produces under hard acceleration.

I was thinking about adding a PPE boost fooler to help with the EGT and smoke, or maybe changing the unit out for a PPE H+2, but I would like to get some opinions before I start making too many expensive decisions. The tranny is also stock for now.

Basically I am looking for fuel economy but I also like neck snapping power. Again, I do not want to make this truck undriveable as I use it every day for work, cruising down the highways as I am in sales.

Let me know what you think and thanks in advance,
Jeff

Have you thought about EFI Live?

Maybe some of our Vendors will pop in and give some suggestions and talk about what they have to offer as far as tuners go.

Welcome to DmaxCentral.

well, id ditch the edge and get a PPE HOT 2, you get one from one of our vendors pretty cheap..

the power, drivibilty are the best out of a hand held tuner..and the PPE will deliver about 3x the power of a edge..

but id start putting pennies in the penny jar for a tranny

i wouldnt worry about a "boost fooler" the PPE and variable turbo will do all the boost fooling together

and PPE will smoke more then edge, depending on the tune you load

For what its worth...

The PPE tuner will not smoke unless you go above level 3. Level 4 starts to smoke, but not much.

I'd bet that the level 3 would rival the power of a hefty Evo tune.

I'm very partial to EFI Live - for less than the PPE Hot +2 you can get the entire EFI Live setup and a "package" of tunes written specifically for your truck. With EFI Live you will never outgrow it, and you aren't stuck with any set tunes - you (or your tuner) can change anything you want about any tune. Once you build the trans you can upgade to the really fun tunes. For your stock LBZ we have tunes from stock to over 530 rwhp including some very nice tow tunes with and without a turbo-brake feature built in.

Thanks for the replies.

I'm not set on the Hot +2, it is just what was recomended to me. I am interested in more info on the EFI Live like ease of use, cost, where to get it type things.

I am fairly up to speed when it comes to computers but I don't really have a handle on programing Diesel trucks. It seems the EFI Live would be a complete custom tune if I'm not mistaking and the PPE is more of a plug and play?

Again, thanks for the info as I am new here and to the programing game.

PPE is plug n play. Just go through the menu and it programs the truck for you.

EFI Live is as complicated as you make it. It ranges from the ease of opening a tune that was made for you and programming your truck, to the extent of tuning every engine parameter yourself. There are endless possibilities with EFI Live since you can change every aspect of the engine with it.

i truly believe that PPE is the best hand out-of-the-box held tuner on the market

As was said EFI Live can be as easy to use as plugging into the truck and loading a tune that has been made for you - it is not actually necessary to write your own custom tunes. The EFI Live hardware and software setup is $799 and most vendors (including myself) include a free tune with purchase. I often come up with packages of tunes for customers that have no interest in writing their own tunes. When you receive you EFI Live package, I walk you through downloading your stock tune, you email it to me, I write your custom tunes based off of it and send them to you, then walk you through loading one of them on your truck.

I agree with Matt that PPE is the most powerful plug and play tuner. And we are PPE dealers as well - the Hot +2 is $899.

As far as I'm concerned there is nothing close to EFI live, as was said, it can be as easy and installing a tune or you can really get involved. I have a great tuner in Idaho Rob so I use his expertise. You pick yourself a good tuner, talk to him, tell him what you want, and then have fun. You do need to mod your tranny a bit, the 6 speeds are pretty good stock, but with not too much investment you can have a great truck with a tranny that handle the extra power.

now THATS what i call customer service! :Handshake:

and i agree also, you can have MANY tunes loaded to you computer, and never have to "make you own" you can get tunes from OTHERGRL, Nick, Rob and others, all at your finger tips!!! ive seen EFI tunes from 40rwhp, all the way to 600rwhp....and the dsp2 and dsp5 is just the best thing since the coffee maker!!!

Drakaar (http://www.dmaxcentral.com/forum/member.php?u=1062) if your looking into EFI Live, id seriously talk to Dustin (OTHRGRL (http://www.dmaxcentral.com/forum/member.php?u=183))

What do you think the guys pushing 800+ and 1000+ are running for tuning? I know of very few running anything other than EFI Live. The DSP2 and DSP5 switches are great - but unfortunately aren't supported by the LBZ that Drakaar owns. The positive side is that as subman said your 6 speed is stronger than the 5 speed found in the trucks that can run a DSP switch.

the last i heard Cindy said something that they was working on the dsp switches for the LBZ? guess that went down hill!

I've been told it wont be a switch. You will have to change tunes with the V2 screen
