View Full Version : BD Turbo bearing bad

I noticed on Saturday that my truck was making a goofy grinding type noise.-:t I thought it was coming from the tranny, and since I just installed a copilot I thought to unhook the copilot and take the truck for a test drive. Still making this gringing noise. So, I went over to my buddies house and he listened to my truck as I slowly crept forward and applied light throttle. Then, I shut the truck down and you could actually hear the turbo winding down with a noise that sounded like a dry bearing.
So, The turbo is going to come out again. Not sure what went wrong as I am using the oil gallery port on the block for oiling supply. I bought the turbo from a member over on the dieselplace and he claimed it only had 12K miles or so, and I believe him when he said that as the turbo was in great shape with a tight shaft, very little play as in none. I have only put about 2k miles on it since I bought it. The wastegate is set at 38lbs and never spiked over 40lbs.
Anyone know if I can rebuild this one or what my next step should be?

I am just happy at this point, no one bought my truck and had this happen to them. I would feel really bad.
But time to move on and get it fixed.

I don’t know the differences between your truck and mine, but check your alternator when you shut your truck off. My truck does the exact same thing when I shut it off and that grinding noise might your alternator free wheeling like mine.

I got the truck trailered home tonight, took the intake off and there is no end play but the side to side and up to down is too much. Looks like a 1/8th inch off my intake wheel is gone too. There is a nice groove in the housing as well.
Well, out she comes and I am sure that it will be heading down to St.Joesph Diesel soon.

So anyone here know anyone that can help me get a s300 cartridge? Are all s300 cartridges the same? Could I measure the one in my bd and order one from borg warner direct that fits one of their many other s300 based chargers?

I am in the process of working with forced inductions on a s400 build, so the s300 turbo is scrapped as of now.

I'm sorry to hear about this, Josh.
Is there a correlation to your 5000 rpm dyno run?
Josh2002cc
06-06-2008, 10:59 PM
Bud, I am sorry to report that my 5K rpm dyno run and the 607 number are innacurate.
When we dynoed my truck, the software was screwed up and did not have a optical sensor on the crank, that is where the low tq numbers came from. Also, the truck shifted into 5th gear and I believe, along with Tim at SJD agrees gave a false reading.
The tune was limited to 4500 rpms by Adam so that rules out the 5000+ rpm dyno run.
Sad to say but my truck did not/does not have 600hp. Which is okay. We believe I am at 500hp or so...not sure.

I am sorry too man...talked to bd and I felt like I called on "bring your kid to work day" because the clown I got was no help.
I never once blamed them, never once asked for something for nothing however he was on the defense from the get go.
So, I will find someone who knows turbos...not someone who builds a dmax turbo kit that was based on a cummins motor.
As you can tell, I am a bit upset over the deal but plan on taking strides with this project....just put my truck in "long term" parking

Truck is up and running again thanks to member IOWALLY. He sent me a replacement bd turbo at NO cost to get me running. My only hopes is that I do not blow this one up before I get the larger one built.
I cannot thank AJ(IOWALLY) and member Alan(AZZKIKRCUDA) enough for the help. AJ for the turbo and Alan for the help installing it. Without these two guys I would have a 7000lb weight holding my driveway down. Thanks guys :thumb::thumb:
