do any of yall know anywhere i can find some heavy spec. torsion bars? i have a 3500 but i want something a little stronger cause i dont like how much the front end moves up and down over large bumps especially in corners, moves so much it makes the back end feel squirly even at 35 MPH in a corner if i hit a large hump or dip to make it move up and down talk about puckerin up when your next to a wall!! couldnt drive a needle through with a sledge hammer:lol:

How many miles are on it? Sounds like you just might need a set of shocks...

it has a little over 78,000 on the odo. i know i need new shocks cause the front tires are cupping horribly, but i would like the front to be a little stiffer with the plans for what i will hang off it. better to have and not need then to need and not have. the shocks i am in the market for are the Fox 2.0's if anyone here is a vendor i would love to hear your prices for them.

How do worn shocks cause the tires to wear funny?

Excessive tire hop. The shocks dampen the bouncing effect of the tires when driving. So bad shock (worn) = tire hopping around like a basketball = tread cupping.;)

X2 on the Bilstein's...although I prefer the 5100 series stainless steel ones myself ):h

I have my old stockers with about 8K miles on them if you want them. I swapped out with bilsteins and honestly didn't notice a whole lot of difference. I have the yellow bilsteins because my suspension is still stock.

i have in the plans for a cognito 4" lift and i was going to go with the dueal hoop up front and run 2 fox 2.0's on each side and the 2 in the rear(maybe even make up a couple of brackets to mount 2 extra 2.0's back there for extra stability). i dont want to spend too much on the replacements. hondarider do you think they are blowing because of the weight? do you think that if i run the twin shock hoop that i wont have this problem? if i wont then i would like to go with the fox's. another choice of mine would be king off road racing shocks but im not sure if they could handle the weight. im open to any suggestions. blksmok how much do you want for em?

James,

Sorry, I know this was not addressed to me...but here goes...

I think that the front shocks are failing because they have different valving then the 5100 series..but I may be way off. Shocks also fail due to driving habits like hitting big bumps faster than recc. speeds, bottoming out the shocks or over extending them ( NO LIMITING STRAPS) and debris pitting the shafts etc, etc.

I am going to get the dual shock hoop up front myself, with 35" tires and a 6 inch lift, more weight...therefore more bounce JMO. I
f you add two more in the rear it will stiffen up the ride, but have you considered the air bags instead ? With air bags, you can adjust more when you want and not suffer from the stiffness all the time.

In my personal experience w/King off road shocks...they get real pricey...trust me, on our last sand car we spent $8500 four four shocks. Don't get me wrong they were AWESOME shocks, but we paid a premium because of the application and that they were dual bypass as well. King shock can be valved accordingly, so weight should not be a concern. King builds shocks for the monster trucks !
have Fox shocks currently on my Toyota 4X4...and they kinda suck...sorry being honest here. They are squeaky, stiff, and have blown the seals three time in the past 6 years. It's a good thing I have a local guy that re-seals them and recharges the nitrogen for me. The re-build is not the prob. IMO it's the cheap seals Fox supplies. I would hesitate buying them again.

Sorry for jumping in here, but I just wanted to share my experience with both products.

hey no prob. the more info the better so i can make a good decision :Handshake:. that rail car sounds like it was a pretty sweet ride :thumb:. i was planning on the bags for the rear "eventually" so that i could apply a little air and lift the truck off the springs so that the ride would be better and when and if i tow anything heavy. i DO NOT like squat. but on the king shocks i was just planning to run something basic but kind of like the fox style, nothing too fancy(8,500:eek:-:t:eek2: that almost made me sick but im sure it was worth it;)) if the bilstiens(??) like what your running will work then so be it.

I like the bilsteins, just want the double shock hoop up front for less shock fade when going off-road. There is quite a bit o' weight on the front axles of these diesels.

just like madmaxdmax said, im sure its because of the weight. might be the valving as well. always seems like the drivers side goes first, then the passenger. they were like 110 bucks for a set.

madmaxdmax you said that you have a different type of bilsteins how do you like them? cause either way i decided i am going to get now what i will need in the futur for the lift for the simple fact that the stock shocks are just too short and i dont like that. will the shocks that you have fit in a stock height application?

Possibly but not absolutely. I suggest contacting a local 4X4 shop for your application. They should have the pertinent info for the shock length and kit you are interested in.

sounds like a plan then, as for now i spose i will take the ones off Daves hands because i have a 900+ mile trip home to Texas coming up in july so i will definatly need somethin fresh on there so i dont completely wear out the front tires.
