As most of you know my son and I have been hitting the drag strip pretty hard right now. I'm going to take this opportunity to share with you what we've learned. I urge others to post up any additions you may have!
As of 11-21-09 our best is 12.3 on a stock motor, cp3, turbo, and injectors on #2, and 11.99 @ 111 on the bottle. Our truck is a 2005 EC LB 4x4.
1. Modded Transmission and convertor
You simply can't do much without this. Although you may not pickup et with it, you won't have much luck picking up et without it. It is a must have.
2. 4" exhaust
Again, you may not see a lot of gain with just this, but it becomes a bigger advantage as the HP goes up.
3. Lift Pump
If you're already running a tune then this is a must. I like the new adjustable low return ones.
4. LBZ mouthpiece and modded / aftermarket air intake
This one is a plus in overall drive-ability. It's also relatively cheap. The LB7 guy's are having good luck modding their truck's mouth piece.
5. Big Tune
No matter where you get it the tune is one of the most important mods you can do, both for speed and longevity
6. Spring clamps
Simple, easy, and effective. Don't go to the track without them.
7. Lowering the front torsion bars on the 4x4
This is a simple and effective mod also. It will save you some broken parts too.
8. Stronger tie rod ends on the 4x4
As you get faster, you will also wanna beef up this area also.
9. Shimmed rail fitting
I shimmed mine to start with, but plugged it in the end.
10. Loose the weight
Right about now would be a good time to put your truck on a diet. A lighter truck runs faster but more importantly a lighter truck BREAKS less!
11. Tires
Light weight and soft is the ticket here. Play with your air pressure and burnouts too. Our truck likes 30 / 35 and a small burnout.
12. Modded fuel regulator
Do it yourself or buy one, but at this point in the game low fuel pressure will kill your et.
13. Down pipe
This part simply helps the turbo breath better and usually comes with an aftermarket turbo kit
14. Headers / up pipes
Although expensive, at this point in the game these really start to pay off.
15. Injectors
If you're playing with stock make sure they are in great shape. High return rates here can kill your rail pressure.
16. Bigger boost tubes
I never really saw a plus from these, other then they stopped blowing the boots off after I changed them.
17. Drilled rail fittings
Another one I never really saw anything from
Lets talk technique now. If you want a good pass time and time again there are things you must learn to do.
1. Keep good records
Keeping a good log book will allow you to track your mods and see what worked and what didn't.
2. Be consistent
As a driver it is important to be methodical as you make your run. Staying in the same lane, doing the same burnout, launching at the same rpm, staging the same every time can all help you be a better / FASTER racer!
3. Be consistent
This goes for the mechanic too.
4. Stage shallow
This is no real secret. By just barely turning on the second bulb you will get you best, and most consistent et's.
5. Be Careful
You can always come back another day.
