I see every type of intake on a day to day basis. On our Duramax's my two favorite based on design and function are S&B and Banks (and I'm no Banks promoter). Given the price difference ($269 shipped for the S&B vs. $399 for the Banks) I typically recommend the S&B. The only AFE intake that I think is OK is the Stage 2 Type Si 75-80882 and it is also a good bit more than the S&B at $347. The rest are open filter designs with half ass attempts to shield them from underhood heat.

I only recommend sealed box design intakes that are truly cold air intakes. I have guys come in all the time with AEM and K&N intakes that say they have a "cold air intake" - I tell them to put their hand on the filter and tell me just how cold it is. One customer I actually hooked up my laptop and showed him that sitting at an idle on a 58* day his intake temps with an AEM bruteforce were over 110*, once we got moving they came down to about 90*. The same day with the temp still at 58* my truck sat idle at 70* and as soon as we got moving it dropped to 58*. I run an LBZ S&B intake sealed to the fender and a custom scoop with 6" intake piping to the turbo. I like that the S&B has the clear lid so you can see the filter and tell if it needs cleaned - I also like that they maximize the surface area of their filters, the filters will barely fit in the box, are oval shaped, and have inverted filter material on the end.

Go with the S&B intake. The best for the dollar out there.

How did you seal yours to the fender?

I took foam insulation from the hardware store that is made to seal a window air conditioner, cut it into 1/4 the size it came and made a ring that I glued around the openings on the side and bottom of the air box. My fender is sealed from under hood heat with stick on thin foam and foil insulation, the hole in the fender where the intake is sealed is cut out to match the hole in the intake, and inside the fender is sealed off just behind that hole with expanding foam. The intake scoop was made with a roll of flashing, rivets and some mesh screening - it is shaped similar to the Banks setup with a bigger inlet and feeds directly into the bottom of the air box which is sealed to it.

I like the AFE stage II cuz you can hear the turbo a LOT!! maybe a s&b is just as loud

If you want to hear the turbo the AEM with the aluminum tubing and open filter or the AFE with the metal tube will make it the loudest, but I thought we were talking about the best performance. The open filters suck in hot air and the metal pipes absorb and transfer even more into the incoming air - the stock intake will have colder intake air temps and better performance. It would be cheaper to weld a "whistler" into your exhaust if you care more about sound than performance.

Just saw this as I'm new here.

This looks like a great upgrade to my intake.

And, the price is right, too.

Thanks.
