View Full Version : Forced cold air induction proto-type

So I decided to tinker around today and figured...what the HELL ! After getting the Volant cold air intake installed (that I bought from a member on "the other place"), I decided to give forced induction a go. Here are some pics of what I did. The 3" PVC down pipe connects to the bottom hole in the Volant air box under the hood with a 3" rubber coupling and s/s hose clamps. At the end of the 3" pvc pipe is a 3" 90 degree elbow (also pvc). The elbow connects to the intake scoop which is made of sheet metal. The "scoop" is attached to the bottom fairing using sheet metal screws. So far I only have $24 in raw materials and 2 hours of my tinker time invested so if it doesn't work...oh well. After installation and driving around town I did notice my intake temps were lower, which I expected they would be. I have yet to test out on the highway. I will also like to see what if any mileage improvements I yield as well. With daytime temps of 110 plus, I figured now would be a good time to get some air other than from under to hood into the intake. :thumb:

looks good to me! I've thought about doing this too. I was going to use the attachment from a shop vac as the bottom scoop. I was also going to put some kind of mesh on the opening so no critters crawl inside.

I found the "scoop" in the a/c vent area of Home Depot HA! HA!. Never thought about the critters...guess it's back to the drawing board for me. Actually I have some heavy duty metal mesh that would work perfectly on the scoop. I will post any performance results when I get the chance.

Does anyone know of a good source for a "pre-filter" cover for the filter element on this set-up ?

Looks good but I hope it doesn't rain or you go through a good size puddle. You will have an engine full of water.

Other than that it looks good. Have you noticed anything seat of the pants?

I'm afraid that if my wife caught me (again) in her pantyhose drawer, I would be in more trouble ):h DON'T ASK WHY !!

I was thinking more along the lines of an Outerwear brand type of pre-filter maybe. What shop in town carries a good selection of sizes? I used to rely on a sandrail shop up the street, but they have closed their doors as of a month ago :(

As of those last pics, I added a fine meshed steel screen inside of the up-tube on the intake in order to keep "critters" out. Although I doubt that I will get a cat sucked up in there (there are fewer cats around here since I moved in)....don't ask me why either ! The screen is more for leaves and trash from the highway.

B. Maybe when you get your "refinery" on-line we can meet up ??

I don't think that I will have to worry much about rain in these parts...Hell we may get 12 inches of the wet stuff a year in Phoenix. Most of the time rain dries before it hits the ground ! I have also made a "rain cover" just in case, although it may just collect dust while stashed in the center console.

I have not had any "ricers" try to challenge me yet today....DAMNIT!! I really need a good reason to roll some coal.

If this doesn't add any horsies...I could always borrow 4 of my uncles again, except I have to feed those and they tend to crap in the trailer on road trips.):h

I am running a really good Cool Air Intake.. I have some testing numbers, from a couple of years ago that we could compare.

I am also concerned that you are going to ingest some water.. If you take some readings we could compare the readings with mine and see how the ram air effect helps out.

Yeah...I was concerned a little about the "vacuuming" of water, that's why I have a plug that I made for bad weather...and a yellow sticky pad that reminds me to install the plug when I see rain clouds on the horizon :thumb:

I guess the next time a dyno is avail. I will have to see how she runs.

He's refering to me... I just built (with the help of a friend who has been using bio and building and selling his own processors for a couple years now) my own processor.

Brian kept bugging me about getting some bio, so I made him a deal... He has to bring me a bunch of oil though. :D

I don't suppose I could come by and take a look ?? I am still working on some oil sources, but would like to know what options and such I have before building my processor...materials list etc..:thumb:

Ive heard of the "ram air scoops" making pretty good gains. I want to make one of these soon. Before i go back to AZ im going to have a intercooler sprayer too. That should drop the temps down quite a bit before it enters the engine.

Next I to will be wrapping/insulating the intake tube as well. So far I have seen a temp drop of around 25 degrees and as you know the Az. heat can kill damn near anything. Now is the best time of year to be testing theories, even though it sucks to work on the truck outside-:t

Sounds like you're going to run out of items to wrap. I think you may have started a trend here.:thumb:
