I hear lots of things about the LB7
Good:
Milege
No EGR
No cat
No overheat
Nice exhaust rumble
Bad:
Injectors.
Am I missing something? Seems like the LB7 would be one to look for on the used market... Would the injector issues keep you from buying one?

LB7 is the way to go that is why I own one.
I have an '01, but I think I'd buy an LBZ if it had to do it all over again.
LB7's might as well be carburated compared to the LBZ/LMM. Just stick your screwdriver in the ecm and turn the fuel up.
The new ones sure are smooth though http://deephousepage.com/smilies/angelharp.gif

I like the newer trucks and all, but even though mine is 6 years old I couldn't be happier. Wouldn't trade for the world

Personally, I'm happy with my LLY, problems and all. Gives me something to tinker with. :D

I was happy with my LLY until I had to pull a big trailer with it. When it went -:t on the side of the road, I wasn't so happy anymore.

I love my LB7 (2003) stock everything except the juice w/attitude, 4" turbo back exhaust, 6" lift, 35" tires. Other than that pretty much stock. The mileage is pretty good too Highway 21-25 mpg city 14-17 (unless I see a ricer who wants to race) ! :driver:

I have a 2002/LB7 and a 2007/LBZ, the LBZ is not much different than a stock LB7 with a small tune in it.
As far as smoothness, it's all in the tuning....;)

I was happy with my lb7 until it left me and the wife stranded on the side of the road pulling a RV :(
I liked it better than the 04 LLY and the 05 LLY I have now... Just could not take a chance with the injectors again :(

I love my lb7, i sure do like how the new rucks run stock tho. Id probably just buy a lbz if i was gonna buy a haul truck

True, very few know this - but if you click the smoothing button 546 times on each map, it will turn your Delphi controller into a Bosch unit. Then the purrring begins.
Here's a video of it. http://deephousepage.com/smilies/bangdesk.gif

I have two lb7's and bought an lbz for work. The lbz rocks for a stock truck, and I really like the manual feature for towing in the mountains, but I am very happy with my lb7's. My 02 is a different animal since the new injectors last month, it took away the sub par that has been there since I bought it. The wifes 01 has been flawless for 163k and if the injectors go now, I have a set sitting on the shelf. My only complaint on the 01 and 02 is not being able to lock out of OD while towing and I have been too lazy to install the upgrade. Both of the lb7s are running tunes, the 01 a hypertech always on level 3 and mine with varying levels of the edge and ppe, right now edge on 4 and ppe on 5 and with an easy right foot the mileage is very good.

My 02 was decent enough. My 03 is just about the most perfect truck I could've bought. 133,000 miles and injectors are still fine. Only 3 show BR higher than 0.xx, and those are at +-2.xx

I love my '03. Always going to have to deal with the injectors though. If I had the knew then what I know now, I think I would have waited for an '06. I purposely waited a couple of years to get to the '03. Figured they would get bugs worked out by 3rd year.....The ol' general still got me with the injectors.
I think they got it all right in '06.

All of them have issues. My LLY left me stranded 500 miles from home in the middle of BFE with a 2-7 injector harness issue.
I guess I would prefer an LB7. I know them and I can normally get them going, even if they have a crankcase full of fuel...............

Put a aftermarket/home made 2-4micron filter inline on the frame rail and injector cup holddowns from trippin and the injector issues are pretty much gone. My LB7 has 200,000 miles and still runs mid 12's every time....LOL i prob just ginxed myself.):h

I've had LB7, LLY, & LBZ. You are correct on the good and bad of the LB7 and the injectors are enough reason for me not to have another. Pain the the ass and cost of replacing, although after 2 failed in Mexico I did drive mine back from Mexico 3500 miles using diesel as oil without anything else failing. LLY was OK with no problems, but I love my LBZ. Perfect so far (75,000 miles) and I love the 6 speed Allison. Liked it soooo much I passed on my normal 18 month or so buy of a LMM due to the emission crap. More and more guys who just drive them or tow them seem to prefer the LBZ.

Yea, but the injectors arent "REALLY" a issue....... 01-04 is warrantied to 200k (the only years with this warranty) and 75% of the 01-04 arent even near that on mileage. I had new ones put in at 180k so i should be good for a long time. All my fuel is filtered 3 times before it hits the injectors. I never run much more than a 50hp n20 shot so the cups dont pop out.

Well, I just had to due injectors on the wifes 01. Had a new set of take outs that I had purchased and boy did I have a pia time with the swap. Original problem, making oil, fuel in crank case. I inspected all of the injectors and only one injector had a check ball protruding. Probably the cause of the leak. Installed the new injectors and immediately had fuel in the oil bad. Tore it back down and ran the engine with the valve covers off. Wouldn't you know it, but the first side I tore down didn't leak. Had to be second side. Looked like the high pressure line was leaking where it threaded on to the injector. Tried lapping the injector line, then I bead blasted it, helped some, finally replaced the line with good used line. All of the high pressure lines had some corrosion on them but didn't seem too bad. Put it all back together and still major fuel leak. I replaced all the other high pressure lines to rule out the corrosion. Still not right. Now I can get the engine to hold rail pressure up to about 20k but crank case still filling with diesel. Tear it apart one more time and run it without valve covers again and low and behold, the injector with the very first line that I changed is puking fuel big time. Pulled the injector and replaced with one of the old ones that looked the best and no more leak. So much for new take out injectors! I should have stuck to my original thoughts and ran the engine without the valve covers originally to find the injector that was leaking and just replaced that one. At 170k the balance rates were still within tolerance. All this and I was 7 months past the 7 year limit of the special policy. Rant over. Not that bad of a job to replace the injectors, just time consuming. I still don't see how gm can only give a tech 8 hours for this job. I wouldn't want to be the one getting paid that time just based on the shortcuts that I could just imagine being taken.

LB7 is a great truck, I still like them. But once you spend some time behind the wheel of an LBZ... smooth, quiet, better stock tuning potential, 6-speed, etc. etc.
LBZ is by far the best starting point IMO. Anything else is starting from behind...
