Well, almost free. ;)

I'm talking about modifying the turbo mouth piece. It's not my idea. It came from Killerbee or someone he knows.

Let's talk about what to do. It's very simple. The turn going into the turbo has a "squared" inside corner. Radiusing this corner with a die grinder will improve flow to the turbo. It's that simple. :)

Here is the link to Michael's worksheet on it.
http://members.cox.net/td-eoc/INDUCTION-THERMAL%20FEEDBACK%20PRIMER.doc

I picked up approximately 3 more pounds of boost on a 440 hp tune after this mod. Also seems a little more responsive. Not sure on the MPG gains yet.

Bottom line is it can't hurt and it sure seems to help.;)

Here is what it looks like on a C4500 LLY/LPD

How sharp is that inside radius? Can you blend it any?

FREE is the best thing you can do for performance lol. <-- something i will be working on shortly. :thumb:

Well i did it i went to help a friend with his tranny and while i was there i went ahead and did this mod. not sure if it helped me any but just in case. ):h i wasnt quite sure how much material could be taken out so i dont know how well i did but it seemed to smooth out real well. i didnt want to make it too thin why i have no clue.

Rick, have you tried the LBZ Mouth Piece instead? My LLY is now free breathing with one. It's not my idea either (KB's idea?), but a lot of LLY owners would benefit from this. I cannot open the downloaded file (da**ed Windows Vista again).

As you can see, the LBZ is way bigger...

But they are the same diameter where they clamp to the turbo...

You keep your factory airbox and MAF, so no recalibration is needed. Here is my LLY truck with the LBZ Mouth Piece modification installed. Mine is a GMC, and hood clearance is not an issue...

http://i257.photobucket.com/albums/hh202/Diesel_Day_Dreamin/complete.jpg

When installing the MP, a coolant line off the EGR tube has to be bent to clear...

http://i257.photobucket.com/albums/hh202/Diesel_Day_Dreamin/bendtube.jpg

And lastly, you hacksaw your stock LLY intermediate tube to length...

These are coming off national backorder, so people should be able to order them now. :) Dealer retail is like $116. and GM parts direct was selling them for $67. plus $20. shipping.

Nice post!!! I haven't done anything except the LLY mod. Got a part # for the LBZ mp?

I will definatly like the LBZ piece. How is that boot being held on to the LLY tube did you just clamp it really tight with the band and is that the bellow from the LBZ or the LLY?

Diesel_Day_Dreamin

Current Part #98011738.

The bellow is LLY. It is the tube between the air box and the Mouth Piece that I cut. The rubber boot connector is a 4''x4'' pipe connector from Lowes $6.97 and is temporary. I am going to do a write up in the DIY section. This is a cheap and very impressive modification. Stay tuned.:)

yup pretty easy to do. i have the chevy and did not have to bend the coolant nipple. i have no clearance issues. i also while in there installed the lbz filter setup.

You said the 4X4 pipe connector is a temp. connector for now what do you plan on using for a permant joint?

Yeah I've been trying to decide if I want to do this or just buy the mouthpiece. I'm of the same train of thought, it can't hurt.

I just radiused my mouthpiece a while back but i think i am going to switch to the LBZ piece. You can look at it and tell that thing flows better:thumb:

At first, I was going to get a silicone rubber connector specifically for turbo applications. I have since decided to do as Stacks04 has done and install the entire LBZ setup. I will have to get my truck reflashed for the MAF calibration because the tube diameter is a lot larger and therefore flows more air past the filament of the MAF sensor (a larger volume at a slower velocity if you know what I mean).

Pictures below are of the LBZ middle tube (larger diameter one), and what's left of my LLY (smaller diameter one). The size alone makes you want to install the entire works. Funny thing is, those aftermarket systems people are paying $300~$400 a piece for still have to flow through the restricted LLY MP. I bet if someone flow-benched an aftermarket w/ the LLY MP vs. the factory LBZ and MP, the LBZ would out flow the aftermarket / LLY mouth piece setup.

I have posted a lot of this stuff at ''the other site'', but if this site is to take off, we need to post this type information here and get everyone to look here.

I definatly agree.

Is there anyway you can take the LBZ MAF and plug it into the LLY or will the codes not match(if they even have them)? Or would it be a connector issue? <--I wouldnt think that so much though.

Or am i not understanding this correctly, will you be changing the MAF as well?

Diesel_Day_Dreamin

I will be using the LLY MAF in the LBZ plumbing. The LLY MAF voltage maxes out lower than the LBZ, but because the LLY intercooler and EGR piping are still in place (and restrictive) I don't think I would benefit changing out the MAF sensor. They are different buy one number. The LLY will bolt (screw) right in the LBZ's location no problem.

By the way, the seat of the pants test drive you will notice increased passing power and faster acceleration / turbo spool up. I have seen small gains in mileage empty, and I suspect I will see better gains while towing. DIC milage increased .6 mpg empty in almost 3/4 of a tank. When I fill up again, I will hand caculate.

James Hess

Wouldnt it be just preperation for a better intercooler and piping to go ahead and put in the LBZ MAF and recalibrate everything to it. Or would you even have to recalibrate if you went with the LBZ MAF? If the LBZ intake is larger diameter over the whole intake then would an aftermarket intake be larger than an LLY aftermarket im not so sure it would be i just had to ask.

Would the LBZ air box mount directly to the LLY air box mounting holes?

the maf sensor is not differant. the sensor scaling and corresponding votlages are programmed into the ecm.

So, you are saying I can install my LLY MAF into my buddy's LBZ and it will run as if nothing has changed? And the last digit being different is O.K.?

Installing the LBZ mouthpiece into my truck was a pain in the ass.

Its bigger and needs to fit in a smaller space.

Now im waiting for EFI Live so I can flash the new MAF settings into the truck.

I didn't find it too hard after making room. It sort of fell right into place once I bent the coolant line and removed two wire loom holders.
