Not that I don't appreciate the way a suncoast 3 or 4 shifts, I do.

It's just that sometimes I have to learn things the hard way on account of morbid curiosity. I put one of these $600 dollar converters in my truck and I've been abusing it for a while now at the 900 Ft/lb level. The truck seems to shift well, not as positive as a suncoast 4 - but I can't complain.

I usually roll around with the converter locked because I don't trust it not to balloon. Whether that's a realistic concern, I don't know. I just know it holds in lockup pretty well and I hope it continues to do so.

I'm curious if anyone else has put these no name converters through the paces and what the results have been.

I'll be honest, I'm no Allison expert. If I'm off my hinges, let me know.

Mike,

I'll have to get ahold of the local guy I got it from, see if he remembers. Are there better off-brand names?

I have no idea if any of these no-name triples are any good. I know most of them are using gas cores and machining the stator to achieve lower stall. If they actually are using an Allison core there will be no ballooning to worry about. I know the billet covers are coming from India but don't know which clutch setup they are using. PI sells their covers and clutch packs for about 378.00 for there big customers so we know you are not running one of those for 600.00. I do know we are about to see triple converters come out of the woodwork starting at 450.00 and up to the wholesalers.

Performance Plus was the name on the box... I probably got taken for a ride on the price.

I am curious though.

are any of these no name converters going to be any good. It would be nice if the price could come down as they are the biggest expense in a trans build. I also know that you get what you pay for and the cost is from all the testing the goes into these along with someone who stands behind there product.

I could never figure out the justification for a $1300 price on a converter, even if it says "diesel" on it. Just doesnt seem to me that theres that much work into it.

I've had a Precision and a Suncoast. I liked the Suncoast best, but Mike was checking to see if the place I got the Precision from ordered me the wrong model by mistake.

yes Mike L had precision build a converter to his specs, it has been highly reccomended to me and is slightly cheaper than the suncoast units.

I have one of them. I think its one of the first ones they shipped to Merchant. Cant complain about the way it works with the transmission based on the racing/pulling I've done.

But I do get a whine from it when the trans is cold. I dont like that, but nothing I can do about it.

Never heard an Alli converter whine. I would look at the pump and filter area.

mike what do you think about buying a alto C5 power pack and using it with my SC III. I figure for an extra $100 I know all of my clutches are new.

Not necessarily. Alli's are known to whine and many times it means nothing; normal. :D

Waste of money. C5 only holds the ring gear from turning. I'll bet you could cut the C5 clutch number in half and still not have a failure.

I dont think you can get a 1058 anymore, so its either the 1054 or the 1057. I wouldnt rule out the new 1056 either.

Terry Hedrick, owner of Precision Industries invented the triple lock converter. Many companies rebadged his converter until they began to build their own. Many big name companies use his billet cover and clutch assembly to build their own converter.

All sizes are the same. Yes they have different models. Pricing is about a 100.00 or so cheaper than the Suncoast and ATS.

The Precision I have is a ML-Triple

I swapped my 1050 out last September for the Precision.
