Alright here's my problem:
every time i turn, in both directions, i get a type of whining sound from inside the cab. It almost sounds like a air release valve on a air compresser, but its a consistant and steady sound, doesnt get louder, and doesnt get quieter.
anyone here know what it could be? i have checked the P.S. fluid and it looks fine..

When it hits the lock or just in general?

I have been hearing this as well with mine. Brian how loud is it exactly and is it a medium tone whine(not to deep but not to light either)? I have figured its the pump but im not sure exactly whats happening cause i have also checked my fluid and all is good.

Brian, it sounds like the power steering pump to me. When did it start? Maybe after you installed some front end components?? :D

after i installed my cognito supports.
Could you have installed something incorrect or tightened something too tight making it hard for your pump to turn the wheels? That's what it sounds like to me. Sounds like your pump is straining to turn the wheels any amount.

i torqued pitman and idler arms to eom specs, and idler arm was a PITA. put front end up on jacks today and had pops turn the wheels slowly, and there was no rubbing/binding on the supports and pitman/idler arms

Okay, with the front off the ground did you try to turn the wheels by actually grabbing the tire and turning it to make sure that something isn't keeping the tires from easily turning? You should be able to turn the tires by hand if the front is off the ground.
Also, did you turn the truck wheels with the steering wheel while the truck front was off the ground, and if so, was the noise still there and did it sound the same?

i turned the wheels by hand, and with the steering wheel, with all weight off the ground. sound was not there, and i could easily move the wheels, with no signs of binding.
the air release sound, was not there when i turned the wheels in the cab.

The wife and i will definatly be at SIR so we can have a listen to it then, On some occassions my truck feels like the power steering pump just gives out only when i am stopped though and trying to turn the wheels. Its when i am doing a 3 point turn or something and i have to keep switching between gears, ill go to turn the wheel and it feels hard then i let off and then try again and it turns with the whine. It hasnt done it to where i cant turn though, just like a quick jab saying give me a break and then all is good except for the sound.

went to local fixer'up diesel shop and they replaced fluid, and still have the whine.
it almost sounds like its purging itself..

The whine might be there permanantly cause when i had my old 5.0 mustang i had the tremec manual and my friend i bought it from had some work done to it but when the guy told them it was finished they picked it up paid for the job and the guy forgot to fill it back. Needless to say it "burnt" the gears and from then on it sounded like i had a roots style supercharger on the car even after it was filled with fluid.
The gears ended up being fine but it had already caused the irreversable damage to make the sound i was always getting asked what kind of charger i had. Dont get me wrong it sounded cool every gear did it except 4th cause it was straight through.

yes but it sucks. alot of it has to do also with the fact that the brake assist is also ran off the p.st pump. alot of work for that little azz pump.

While Brian was looking for his problem, the problem found him.
Truck had to be driven to the dealership with no power steering earlier today.

Funny how that works sometimes, at least he was not towing. I hope.
